Perseus is a hero from Greek mythology, best known for slaying Medusa, the snake-haired Gorgon whose gaze could turn people to stone. He is also famous for rescuing Andromeda, a princess who was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster.

Who Was Perseus?

• Son of Zeus and Danaë (a mortal princess).
• His grandfather, King Acrisius of Argos, was told by an oracle that his grandson would kill him. To prevent this, Acrisius locked Danaë in a tower, but Zeus visited her in the form of golden rain, and she became pregnant with Perseus.
• Acrisius, fearing the prophecy, cast Danaë and baby Perseus into the sea in a wooden chest. They survived and were taken in by Dictys, a fisherman on the island of Seriphos.

1. Slaying Medusa
   • King Polydectes, ruler of Seriphos, wanted to marry Danaë and tricked Perseus into fetching Medusa’s head as a “gift,” expecting him to die.
   • With the help of the gods Athena and Hermes, he received a mirrored shield, winged sandals, a cap of invisibility, and a magical sword.
   • He successfully beheaded Medusa, using the mirror shield to avoid her deadly gaze.
   • From her blood sprang Pegasus, the winged horse.
2. Rescuing Andromeda
   • On his way home, he found Andromeda, chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster (Cetus), because her mother, Queen Cassiopeia, had offended the sea god Poseidon.
   • He used Medusa’s head to turn the monster to stone and married Andromeda.
3. Fulfilling the Prophecy
   • Perseus later accidentally killed his grandfather Acrisius during a discus-throwing contest, fulfilling the prophecy.
